Peace of Wisdom

Patience

By Andy Andrews

The taxi driver arrived at an address for the final pickup of his day. Exhausted and ready to go home, he glanced at his watch.  He was on time, but no one came to the cab.  He waited for several more minutes.

Still…no one came.

He turned off the vehicle and ran to knock on the door.

“Just a minute,” a feeble voice responded. Soon, a beautifully dressed elderly woman appeared with her suitcase. A quick glance inside told him she wouldn’t be returning anytime soon.

As he assisted her to his taxi, she asked if he’d take the downtown route.

“It’s not the shortest way,” he explained.

“Oh, I don’t mind…I’m on my way to hospice…” she replied, explaining she had no family left and had just been given a short time to live.

Stunned, he reached for the dash, turning off the meter.

“What route would you like me to take?”

For two hours, they rode and reminisced before he finally delivered her to her final earthly home.

As he pulled away, he wondered if he’d ever done anything so important.

What if he’d signed off early because he’d been tired?

What if he’d said no to driving downtown?

What if he’d driven away in anger because the customer wasn’t ready?

How often do we miss significant moments because we’re in a hurry, already laser-focused on what’s next?

I’m Andy Andrews…

Today’s Peace of Wisdom can be found in having patience so we don’t miss the not-so-little moments of life.
