Peace of Wisdom

Giving

By Andy Andrews

Picture this, it’s Christmas morning. You’re about to open a present.  When you do, there it is…that special something you’ve been talking about all year. Your best friend remembered and got it for you. Now, reverse those roles.

Your friend is opening a package and about to see that special something he’s talked about all year. You knew he’d never buy it for himself, so you got it for him. He smiles and is overcome with emotion and gratitude.

Both situations are great, but which of the two actually made you feel better?   Probably the second.   Christmas, of course, is the expected time to give, but we can be generous all year long.   If we are, perhaps that feeling will  stay with us longer.

Whether it’s an anonymous donation, a quietly accomplished good deed, or a gift for a friend, we can all put more of ourselves into this practice. And curiously, the more we give, the more it encourages others to do the same.  Giving can spark a bonfire of generosity.  Eventually, lives are changed.

Today’s Peace of Wisdom can be found in maintaining a generous spirit.
