Betcha Didn't Know

The Art of Heists

with Andy Andrews

Betcha Didn’t Know that a painting once stole the spotlight from the Olympics! In this episode, Andy Andrews reveals the jaw-dropping story of how Edvard Munch’s masterpiece, The Scream, was snatched right out of Norway’s National Museum on the very day the Winter Olympics kicked off in Lillehammer. With an unsecured window, outdated cameras, and a guard more focused on coffee than security, the scene was set for an audacious theft. Learn how this daring heist grabbed more global headlines than the Olympic opening ceremonies and dive into the murky world of art crime, where masterpieces vanish and resurface in the strangest ways. This tale is no brushstroke of luck – it’s a masterpiece of mischief!

Discussion Questions:

#1) The Scream was hanging in a world-famous museum, with no alarm, no insurance, and next to an openable second-story window. What’s something really valuable in your life that you’ve maybe been a little too casual about protecting? (Yes, snacks in the pantry count.)

#2) Art theft is big business—Interpol says it’s the third-largest criminal industry in the world. Why do you think people steal things that are impossible to sell publicly—like famous paintings or rare treasures? What would you do if you suddenly had something priceless and stolen?

#3) (Great for kids or creatives!) Let’s say you were designing a Museum of the Missing—an entire gallery full of stolen art that mysteriously reappeared. What would you name your museum? And what kind of security system would you invent to protect the art this time around? (Laser beams? Moats? Guard parrots?)
