The Shiras bull moose—standing up to 6 feet tall and weighing nearly 1,000 pounds—needs 30–50 pounds of food daily in the warmer months. This one was feeding on aquatic plants, his antlers still in their soft, velvet stage. Moose can swim at 6 mph and dive up to 20 feet deep while holding their breath for about 30 seconds.

This mature Shiras bull moose had wandered away from his cow while feeding in the open sagebrush. Fall colors and smoke from the nearby Camp Creek fire created a dramatic and unforgettable scene.
