Has anyone ever walked into your office or bedroom and caught you mid-sentence…talking to yourself? When that happens we often sheepishly mumble some self-conscious excuse to explain away the conversation, maybe blaming a mistake that had you asking, “What was I thinking?”
But why are we so embarrassed about talking to ourselves? Are we afraid people will think we’re crazy? Maybe.
Here’s a better question: Am I talking to myself, or listening to myself?
This concept highlights how we tend to passively and repeatedly listen to the negative internal voices that remind us of mistakes or doubts. Instead, try actively replacing those negative thoughts by speaking encouraging words to yourself.
Rather than criticizing yourself with “What was I thinking?” followed by ten more minutes of self-condemnation; replace that with statements like:
- Well… Guess that didn’t work–I’ll do better next time!”
- “I can fix this!”
- “I’m getting better and faster at this every time I try it.”
That positivity boosts your self-esteem and reduces stress! It’s a small shift that can lead to a big change.
Today’s Peace of Wisdom can be found when you start talking to yourself!
