How often do we hear, “Focus on the future.” “Concentrate on the end result.” “Keep your eyes on the prize!”
These encouraging proverbs have validity, but such idioms can warp our perspective if they are our primary maxims in life. Looking ahead is the way to move forward. But when we are only paying attention to what’s down the road, we miss the blessings of where we are.
Just as we should “reach for our dreams” and “aim for success,” we also should “be present in the present.” There must be a balance. Over focusing on our targets keeps us from experiencing the now. It can also bring great stress, both to ourselves and others. Our family, friends and co-workers don’t deserve that. And we don’t deserve to miss out on precious moments with them.
Sometimes life can be so difficult, joy in the present seems impossible. But happiness can almost always be found if we’re intent on finding it. We can take pleasure in simple things. A breath of fresh air… a grateful thought… a smile given and received.
Today’s Peace of Wisdom can be found in balancing our attention between what’s ahead, and what’s right in front of us.
