Don’t Quit – Refine

By Andy Andrews

Before Julia Child became a household name, she spent nearly a decade working on Mastering the Art of French Cooking—a cookbook she co-wrote for American home cooks.

But the first version didn’t land.

Publishers rejected it. Some said it was too complicated. Others thought it was too long. One even asked if she could simplify it into 50 quick recipes for housewives. Julia said no.

So she went back to the kitchen. Back to the writing table. She re-tested every recipe, rewrote every instruction, clarified every step. Over and over again. It took years.

When it finally hit shelves in 1961, Mastering the Art of French Cooking wasn’t just a cookbook—it was a game-changer. It shifted the way Americans approached food. It launched a new career for Julia. And it nearly didn’t happen.

In business—and in life—it’s easy to get discouraged by a “no.” But persistence isn’t just about trying again. It’s about getting better.

Sometimes the idea is solid. It just needs refining—and a little more time.

Today’s “Peace of Wisdom” can be found in remembering that rejection doesn’t always mean stop…it might just mean sharpen.
