Peace of Wisdom

An All-In Marriage

By Andy Andrews

Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher of North Carolina were married for 86 years and 290 days.

Wedded in 1924, they had five children and numerous grand- and great-grandchildren. Hand in hand, they weathered a Great Depression, a World War, and more. Until Herbert passed away in 2011 and Zelmyra in 2013.

The secret? Herbert said, “Just keep showing up.”

And Zelmyra said,  “Remember marriage is not a contest – never keep a score.”

How can your relationship withstand life’s storms?

You’ve heard the common-sense answers.

Trust and respect. Teamwork. Agreement on children and finances. Honest communication. Appreciation. And fun.

Let’s add, love your spouse where they are? Extend grace for their imperfections. And, we hope they’ll return the courtesy.

But what do couples like the Fishers, say is the most important ingredient for a healthy marriage?

Courageous, steadfast commitment. A purposeful determination to see your relationship through to the end.

Decide that you won’t quit and you’re in this for the long haul. Till death do you part.

Today’s “Peace of Wisdom” can be found when you’re all in for your marriage.
