Peace of Wisdom

The Fog Won’t Last Forever

By Andy Andrews

Big achievements don’t just happen overnight—they’re built on a foundation of small, consistent victories.

But what happens when the finish line is hidden in the fog?

In 1952, long-distance swimmer Florence Chadwick attempted to swim 26 miles between California’s Catalina Island and the mainland. Halfway through, a dense fog surrounded her and made it impossible for her to see the shoreline. Overwhelmed and completely exhausted, she gave up—just half a mile from her goal. She later admitted she likely would’ve kept going had she seen the shore.

Determined not to let the fog win, she tried again two months later. This time, instead of focusing on the shore, she locked her attention on little milestones: the next boat, the next buoy, the voices of her support crew… The fog rolled in yet again, but with her shift in perspective, she finished—and set a world record!

Life will have foggy seasons where your objective feels distant or even invisible. Don’t let uncertainty make you quit. Trust that small progress adds up—and that the fog won’t last forever.

What small step can you focus on today?

Today’s “Peace of Wisdom” can be found by moving forward, even when you can’t see the finish line.
