Peace of Wisdom

Broken Pieces

By Andy Andrews

Art can teach us about many things – like history, emotions and perspective. Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer. This sealant is often mixed with gold, silver, or platinum powder. The result is an object that’s even more beautiful and valuable than the original.

Imagine you drop a treasured ceramic bowl, chipping off a piece of its rim. You might grab some glue to patch it, hoping no one will ever notice. It rarely works perfectly. But that’s what we often do, isn’t it? We try to hide our flaws and pretend everything’s fine.

In Kintsugi, the cracks and repairs aren’t hidden. They’re highlighted. These brilliant pieces illustrate how something broken can be put back together in a new way. The result is stronger, more interesting, and more unique.

Whether it’s a chipped piece of china, a crushed spirit, a broken heart, or a shattered life—when we courageously pick up the pieces and proudly put them together again, we attest to the beauty of flaws and the resilience we gain through repair.

Nothing good comes from just staring at broken pieces.

Today’s “Peace of Wisdom” can be found when we choose to make something new from our fallen fragments.
