Ever heard the phrase “Tyranny of the Urgent”? It was coined by Charles Hummel in 1967, who wrote a booklet by the same title.
Whether you’ve heard it or not, I bet you instinctively understood the meaning! It’s that constant tension between doing what’s important and what’s urgent the “right here, right now” demands that always seem to take precedence.
We often sacrifice things that truly matter because we necessarily have to react to urgent situations that need our immediate attention. Sometimes, those priorities we care about end up sneaking up on us, becoming urgent tasks themselves ones we no longer have the time or the energy to give proper consideration.
To prioritize what really matters and relieve the stress of always feeling under pressure, we need a plan. That plan may involve crossing a few things off your list or delegating tasks to others. Then, you can focus on tackling those important things before they too become urgent.
Today’s Peace of Wisdom can be found when you make a plan to finish something important.
