Peace of Wisdom

Don’t Overfill Your Plate

By Andy Andrews

Have you ever noticed people at the all-you-can-eat salad bar? Occasionally, someone’s plate is so full you’re not sure they’ll make it back to their table without a disaster. Some restaurants hand out large plates, others smaller ones. I’m sure there’s a strategy behind it all, but I don’t know what it is.

I do know people are the same way. Some have a small, simple life and fill it up to the full. Others seem to have an endless capacity for more—more people, more projects, more work, more fun. Either way, it’s important to know ourselves well enough to enjoy whatever our personal full life looks like.

We need to understand our limits—and recognize not everyone can carry as much as we can, and some can carry far more. That means not becoming restless for someone else’s life… and not forcing our own margin and measurement onto others.

Know your worth, your weight, your capacity. What can your plate carry?

Underfill it, and we miss the feast. Overfill it, and we risk a calamity on the floor.

Today’s “Peace of Wisdom” can be found when you don’t overfill your plate.
