Peace of Wisdom
Chivalry

By Andy Andrews

It’s been said that “Chivalry is always in style”…and, it is. Of course, these days, I’m not sure everyone still agrees, but the truth remains – one should always “strive to give a better first impression, every single time.” To be a person of character who respects others. Today, we refer to it simply as “common courtesy.”

The term “Chivalry” was coined in Europe during the Dark and Middle Ages. It referred to a code of ethics adhered to by knights, both on and off the battlefield. Duty, honor, bravery, courtesy, and courage were the marks of a knight – especially regarding their treatment of the opposite sex.

Today, unfortunately, chivalrous behavior is a rarity – and most definitely sets one apart when it happens. Things like holding the door for others, standing when a lady enters the room, saying “yes sir” or “no ma’am” to your elders, expressing a word of gratitude for an act of kindness, setting your cell phone aside while engaged in conversation, having proper manners at the table, being punctual, thoughtful in every action…the list is practically endless. And you can add to it…with a little thoughtful awareness.

Today’s Peace of Wisdom can be found when we choose to dignify others – male or female – with kindness and respect.
