Peace of Wisdom

Peer Pressure

By Andy Andrews

Are you a student? Even if you aren’t, you’ve no doubt experienced peer pressure.

You probably remember that old question your parents asked you –  “if your friends jumped off a bridge, would you jump too?”

What if I told you peer pressure can be used to influence you and those around you in ways that aren’t harmful?

To understand how, we must consider the circumstances in which it could affect you – both positively and negatively.

These situations happen every day, even when we don’t expect them. What if you found out your friends were doing study sessions that helped them all bring their grades up? This might influence you to join them, right?

That’s good peer pressure.

We’ll occasionally be faced with pressure to do the wrong thing, as well – like skipping class or not showing up for a shift at work.

Being mindful of these interactions with others is only the first step.

It’s important we learn to avoid the negative influence of those around us, or even ourselves when we’re tempted to make wrong decisions.

Today’s Peace of Wisdom can be found in the positive influences we create for others.
