Seems like a cynical question, but it’s certainly a question I had at one time in my life. When my parents died and I made some bad moves and ended up living under a pier, I remember asking a version of that question – “Is life, just a lottery ticket?
Does having too much money (or not enough) affect parenting style?
And the answer to that question is no. And yes. With adolescents especially, the answer is no, that it should not affect our parenting style. With small children and adolescents, actually all the way through. It should not affect our parenting style. Not if we are focused on principles and if we are focused on the idea that we’re not just raising great kids.
How do you encourage a child who does not seem to have a focus on their future?
I have to say, and this may be a little controversial, but, my experience is that there are a lot of teenagers in the 11th or 12th grade who don’t seem to have a focus on their future because of the expectations of the adults in their lives. They’ve grown up with the adults around them expecting that they go to college.
