The idea for “Let It Heal” began years ago with the memory of a dark night at a friend’s lake house. While staring into the flames of a campfire and purposefully releasing his grip on negative thoughts, Anthony Crawford realized he had created space in his life for more positive things.
In 1864, during some of The Civil War’s bloodiest fighting, poet Robert Lowry penned words of optimistic direction to a nation divided. Put to a simple melody, the song eventually became known by its first line.
The day this song was written, Jimmy Yeary had received a call from a family member who admitted she was suffering through a dark time. She was not only deeply depressed, but ashamed to tell anyone. “I just feel so isolated,” she told Jimmy, and added, “It’s as if I’ve been abandoned.”
Poking fun at the “family he never had,” Anthony wrote Cabin on the Hill with the same tongue-in-cheek he had written one of Sugarcane Jane’s biggest hits, Pedigree.
Jimmy was raised in a little town named Hillsboro, Ohio. One particular morning, he was really homesick and wishing he could–at least for a moment–return to the place he’d grown up.
